Our Hurdles are a wonderfully versatile addition to the traditional English garden, offering gentle structure, subtle protection and understated charm. Handmade by us in Lincolnshire from solid steel, these hurdles are left bare to weather naturally, developing a rich, rusted patina that sits beautifully among planting schemes old and new.
Available in two sizes – Small (50cm wide x 65cm tall) and Large (75cm wide x 95cm tall) – each hurdle is sold individually and designed to be pushed directly into the soil. Heights shown are total heights; once secured into the ground they will sit slightly lower, typically by around 10cm depending on soil type and condition.
Within the border, Plant Hurdles work particularly well as a mid-border plant support, helping to gently hold herbaceous perennials, cottage garden favourites and informal planting in place. The open design provides support without visually dominating the border, allowing plants to weave naturally through and around the steelwork as they grow.
Beyond planting, these hurdles offer practical flexibility elsewhere in the garden. Positioned temporarily, they can be used as a lightweight fence around barbecues, helping to keep children and pets at a safe distance without the need for bulky or permanent barriers. The decorative scroll tops can also be interlocked, creating a longer run and adding stability when used in this way.
Steel Hurdles are equally effective at discouraging dogs from charging across valuable flower beds. While not intended as a solid fence, they provide a clear visual and physical boundary that helps slow fast-moving pets and protect plants from accidental damage.
With no plastic coating, these hurdles are entirely maintenance free and environmentally friendly. Designed to age gracefully outdoors, they require no treatment or upkeep — simply install and allow nature and time to do the rest.
